Armed Attack in Niger State Leaves Fifty Dead
(MENAFN) The number of fatalities from a violent raid on a marketplace in Nigeria’s Niger state has climbed to 50, according to reports on Sunday.
An armed group stormed the Kasuwan Daji market in Demo village on Saturday, firing indiscriminately at residents, abducting several individuals, and plundering food supplies.
A collective burial was organized for the victims, while those injured were transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment.
President Bola Tinubu denounced the assault and directed security agencies to capture those responsible.
“They are testing the resolve of our nation and must face the full consequences of their criminal actions,” he declared.
Tinubu also ordered authorities to swiftly rescue all persons taken during the attack.
Niger state has been plagued by repeated terrorist incidents in recent weeks, especially in rural areas vulnerable to armed groups operating from forested zones.
On November 21 of last year, gunmen kidnapped 315 people — including 303 students and 12 teachers — from St. Mary’s Private Catholic Primary and Secondary School in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area.
Around 50 students managed to escape within the first day and were reunited with their families, while the federal government later secured the release of 100 more.
By December 21, Information Minister Mohammed Idris confirmed that all remaining abducted students had been freed.
