China Voices Support for Saudi Conference on Yemen Crisis
(MENAFN) Beijing threw its weight behind a Saudi Arabia-initiated conference Monday designed to tackle the deepening turmoil engulfing Yemen's southern territories.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian declared during a Beijing briefing that China endorses "upholding Yemen's sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, welcomes the dialogue among Yemen's southern factions to be held in Riyadh."
Lin emphasized the Yemeni government's international legitimacy, stating it "is widely recognized by the international community."
Beijing urged all involved actors to "remain calm, exercise restraint, resolve differences and disputes through political dialogue and create conditions for early restoration of peace and tranquility in Yemen," Lin added.
China also praised Saudi Arabia and the UAE for "emphasizing respect for each other's sovereignty and security."
The Saudi Foreign Ministry announced Saturday it accepted a proposal from Yemen's presidential council chairman Rashad al-Alimi to convene the Riyadh conference, which seeks to forge a unified strategy for resolving southern grievances.
Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates released separate declarations endorsing the diplomatic push.
Yemen has experienced dramatic upheaval following last Tuesday's events, when Southern Transitional Council (STC) forces seized Hadhramaut and Al-Mahra provinces in early December. These strategically vital regions comprise approximately half of Yemen's landmass and border Saudi Arabia directly.
Tensions exploded after Riyadh publicly accused Abu Dhabi of "pushing STC forces to carry out military operations" near the kingdom's southern frontier in Hadhramaut and Al-Mahra. The UAE categorically rejected the allegations.
The STC contends that consecutive Yemeni administrations have systematically sidelined southern areas through political and economic neglect, justifying their separatist demands. Yemeni officials dismiss these assertions while pledging unwavering dedication to national unity.
