China Describes U.S. Operation in Venezuela as “Hegemonic”
(MENAFN) The Chinese Foreign Ministry strongly criticized the recent U.S. military action in Venezuela, describing the capture of President Nicolas Maduro as “hegemonic.”
On Saturday, President Donald Trump declared that his administration would “run” the oil-rich South American country, following the swift abduction of Maduro and his wife by U.S. forces.
“China is deeply shocked by and strongly condemns the US’s blatant use of force against a sovereign state and action against its president,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry stated later that day.
It further warned that “such hegemonic acts of the US seriously violate international law and Venezuela’s sovereignty, and threaten peace and security in Latin America and the Caribbean region,” urging Washington to respect international law and the UN Charter.
The intervention occurred only hours after a Chinese delegation, led by President Xi Jinping’s special envoy Qiu Xiaoqi, visited Venezuela. While Beijing has not issued details of the meeting, Caracas reported that it aimed to reinforce a “multipolar world of development and peace” in response to Western “unilateral coercive measures.”
China and Venezuela have sustained a close “all-weather strategic partnership” since 2023, further solidified by an investment agreement signed in 2024.
