China labels US attack on Venezuela, capture of Maduro as hegemonic
(MENAFN) The Chinese Foreign Ministry sharply criticized the US military operation in Venezuela and the capture of President Nicolas Maduro, labeling the actions “hegemonic.”
On Saturday, President Donald Trump announced that Washington will “run” Venezuela shortly after US forces entered the country and detained Maduro and his wife.
“China is deeply shocked by and strongly condemns the US’s blatant use of force against a sovereign state and action against its president,” the ministry said in a statement. It added, “Such hegemonic acts of the US seriously violate international law and Venezuela’s sovereignty, and threaten peace and security in Latin America and the Caribbean region,” calling on Washington to respect the UN Charter and international law.
The strike came just hours after a Chinese delegation visited Venezuela, led by President Xi Jinping’s special envoy, Qiu Xiaoqi. Caracas stated the visit reinforced a “multipolar world of development and peace” against Western “unilateral coercive measures.” China and Venezuela have maintained a major “all-weather strategic partnership” since 2023 and signed an investment agreement in 2024.
In response to the US action, Beijing, echoing Moscow, condemned the “forcible seizure” of Maduro and his wife and demanded their immediate release. With Maduro absent, Venezuela’s Supreme Court granted Vice President Delcy Rodriguez presidential powers.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also called Rodriguez to express Moscow’s solidarity, reaffirm support for Venezuela’s sovereignty, and emphasize building on the bilateral strategic partnership agreement signed in May between Russia and Caracas.
