ECOWAS calls on world to respect Venezuela’s independence
(MENAFN) The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) urged the global community on Sunday to “respect the independence and territorial integrity” of Venezuela following a US military operation that captured President Nicolas Maduro and his wife.
In its statement, the bloc expressed concern over the latest developments in Venezuela. While acknowledging the right of nations to combat international crimes such as terrorism and drug trafficking, ECOWAS emphasized that “the international community [has] an obligation to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of each other as enshrined in international law, especially article 2 (4) of the United Nations Charter.”
The organization reaffirmed its support for the Venezuelan people, encouraging citizens to shape the future of their country through inclusive and participatory processes.
Reports indicate that the death toll from Saturday’s US military operation has reached 80, with the number potentially rising further, according to senior Venezuelan officials. Venezuela’s Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino stated that a large portion of Maduro’s security team was killed during the operation, without providing precise figures.
US President Donald Trump confirmed that the military action resulted in the capture of Maduro and his wife, pledging temporary American oversight of the country with troops if necessary. The couple was taken to New York on Saturday and is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. They face federal charges in the US for drug trafficking and alleged collaboration with gangs designated as terrorist organizations.
Maduro has denied the allegations, and Venezuelan officials in Caracas have demanded the couple’s release, describing the operation as illegal.
