Al-Sisi Pledges Full Support For UN Desertification Chief In Cairo Meeting
Al-Sisi expressed confidence in Fouad's expertise to address global environmental challenges and support international efforts toward sustainable development goals, according to a statement from the presidency. He emphasised that Egypt would provide all necessary assistance to ensure the success of the UNCCD, which he described as the“binding legal framework” for addressing desertification and the impacts of drought through multilateral partnership.
Fouad, who also serves as a UN Under-Secretary-General, praised Egypt's“pivotal role” and its extensive land reclamation projects, noting that these achievements were made despite the significant challenge of water scarcity.
She further commended Cairo's commitment to the convention, citing the timely submission of national reports and the setting of voluntary targets for land rehabilitation.
The meeting, attended by Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, explored opportunities to strengthen relations between Egypt and the UNCCD secretariat. Discussions focused on expanding cooperation and developing support mechanisms for member states, particularly across Africa and the Arab region.
The presidency spokesperson, Mohamed El-Shennawy, stated that the talks aimed to enhance the effectiveness of the convention in supporting member states' efforts to meet sustainable development goals amidst increasing environmental pressures.
