Syrian FM, UN Official talk about Israeli actions in southern Syria
(MENAFN) Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani met on Monday with Major General Patrick Gauchat, Head of Mission and Chief of Staff of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO), to discuss Israeli violations in southern Syria.
During the meeting in Damascus, the two officials emphasized the importance of UNTSO’s role in documenting Israeli actions in the region, according to a statement shared on social media.
They also explored “ways to enhance existing cooperation and coordination, in a manner that supports stability and helps maintain calm in the region… within the framework of respect for the sovereignty of the Syrian Arab Republic and its territorial integrity,” the statement added.
The ministry did not provide details on Gauchat’s arrival or the length of his visit.
In recent weeks, Israeli forces have reportedly conducted near-daily incursions in southern Syria, particularly in Quneitra province, carrying out arrests, setting up checkpoints, and clearing forested areas—actions that have increased local resentment toward Israel. Tel Aviv has also intensified attacks, targeting civilians as well as Syrian military installations, vehicles, weapons, and ammunition.
Following the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime in late 2024, Israel expanded its presence in the Syrian Golan Heights by occupying the demilitarized buffer zone, a move seen as violating a 1974 agreement with Syria.
