South Africa Voices Concerns Over Israel’s Somaliland Recognition

(MENAFN) South Africa has raised alarm bells over Israel's fresh decision to grant diplomatic recognition to Somaliland as a sovereign nation, issuing a sharp rebuke on Monday.

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation released a formal statement condemning the move as an assault on Somalia's sovereignty and territorial boundaries, warning it poses an immediate danger to regional stability across the Horn of Africa.

"We uphold the African Union's principle of uti possidetis, the sanctity of inherited borders as the continent's essential safeguard against conflict," the statement said. "We distinguish unequivocally between decolonization and secession. The former restores sovereignty; the latter dismantles it. Israel's action validates fragmentation and risks a domino effect of instability."

South Africa called on global powers to oppose what it characterized as foreign meddling, emphasizing the need for international backing of a unified and secure Somalia.

The declaration underscores growing continental tensions over the controversial recognition, which critics fear could trigger border disputes and separatist movements throughout Africa.
