Yemen Announces Cancellation of UAE Defense Pact
(MENAFN) Yemen has terminated its joint defense treaty with the United Arab Emirates and mandated the immediate exit of all Emirati military personnel within one day, the government announced Tuesday. The decision follows Abu Dhabi's delivery of weaponry to Southern Transitional Council militia operating in Yemen's southern territories.
Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council Chairman Rashad al-Alimi issued the ultimatum during a nationally broadcast address, stating: "All Emirati forces must withdraw from all Yemeni territory within 24 hours."
The chairman also declared a nationwide state of emergency beginning immediately and extending 90 days. Simultaneously, authorities imposed a three-day closure affecting all aviation facilities and ground border checkpoints, media confirmed.
The announcement came hours after Saudi-led coalition aircraft conducted what officials characterized as a "limited" military strike against two commercial vessels docked at Mukalla port along Yemen's southern coastline.
Coalition spokesperson Maj. Gen. Turki al-Maliki told media that the targeted ships had sailed from Fujairah port in the UAE and arrived at Mukalla between December 27-28. According to al-Maliki, neither vessel obtained mandatory clearance from the coalition's Joint Forces Command before entering Yemeni waters.
