AU stands against Somaliland independence, emphasizes Somalia’s unity

(MENAFN) The African Union (AU) firmly rejected moves to recognize Somaliland as an independent state on Friday, reiterating its commitment to preserving Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

In an official statement, the AU Commission chair, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, “unequivocally reaffirms” the organization’s position on “respect for the intangibility of borders inherited at independence.” He also “firmly rejects any initiative or action aimed at recognizing Somaliland as an independent entity, recalling that Somaliland remains an integral part of the Federal Republic of Somalia.”

The statement stressed that any attempt to challenge Somalia’s unity and territorial sovereignty contradicts the core principles of the African Union and could create a dangerous precedent, threatening peace and stability across the continent. It also emphasized the AU’s “unwavering commitment to the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Somalia, as well as its full support for the efforts of the Somali authorities to consolidate peace, strengthen State institutions, and advance inclusive governance.”

Reports confirm that Israel became the first country to officially recognize Somaliland as a sovereign state on Friday. Since declaring independence from Somalia in 1991, Somaliland has functioned as a de facto autonomous region, maintaining its own administrative, political, and security systems, though it has struggled to gain formal international recognition.

The Somali government continues to reject Somaliland’s independence, regarding the region as an integral part of its territory. According to authorities, any direct engagement or agreements with Somaliland are considered violations of Somalia’s sovereignty and unity.
