Turkey voices concern over situation in Yemen
(MENAFN) Türkiye on Friday voiced concern over “the prevailing situation” in Yemen, emphasizing the importance of regional stability. The Turkish Foreign Ministry praised Saudi Arabia’s “prudent stance” amid rising tensions and commended steps taken by both Saudi Arabia and the UAE to maintain security in the country. Ankara reaffirmed its support for efforts aimed at safeguarding Yemen’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, while promoting peace and prosperity.
The escalation stems from recent actions by the Southern Transitional Council (STC). Since December 3, STC forces have taken control of parts of eastern Yemen’s Hadramout province following clashes with the Hadramout Tribes Alliance and government-aligned First Military Region forces. Four days later, the STC expanded its presence into Mahra province, previously under government authority.
In response, a joint Saudi-Emirati military team was deployed to Aden to coordinate with the STC and arrange the redeployment of its forces to positions outside the two provinces. The takeover has sparked growing local and regional calls for the STC to withdraw from Hadramout and Mahra, which together cover nearly half of Yemen’s territory, roughly 555,000 square kilometers.
The UN has cautioned that continued escalation could worsen Yemen’s already dire humanitarian and economic crisis, one of the worst in the world.
