Thailand, Cambodia Edge Closer to Ceasefire Deal
(MENAFN) Thailand and Cambodia are preparing for decisive discussions aimed at securing a potential ceasefire on Saturday, following renewed border confrontations in recent weeks that have resulted in roughly 100 fatalities.
Thailand’s Defense Minister Natthaphon Narkphanit and Cambodia’s Defense Minister Tea Seiha are anticipated to convene in Thailand’s Chanthaburi province. This meeting comes after both armed forces wrapped up three consecutive days of dialogue on Friday.
The upcoming weekend discussions are intended to finalize a shared declaration under the Kuala Lumpur agreement framework, as reported by a news outlet.
Previously, both nations endorsed a peace accord in October in Kuala Lumpur, witnessed by US President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. However, the accord was subsequently put on hold after Thai troops suffered serious injuries from a landmine blast in a border region.
During the negotiations, Cambodia is said to have presented a sixth revised draft proposal to Thailand, according to a news agency.
On Friday, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul confirmed that the government had authorized Natthaphon to participate in the meeting with the Cambodian delegation.
