Flood-Hit Sri Lanka Secures Indian Reconstruction Aid Package
(MENAFN) India on Tuesday unveiled a $450 million reconstruction aid package for Sri Lanka, which is reeling from the catastrophic flooding caused by Cyclone Ditwah.
The announcement coincided with a visit to Colombo by India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who met with senior officials, including Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The cyclone, which struck the island nation on Nov. 17, has claimed more than 640 lives, with 183 people still reported missing.
“Building on our first responder activity under operation Sagar Bandhu, India will commit to a reconstruction package of USD 450 million to Sri Lanka,” Jaishankar wrote on US social media company X.
He added that the funds would address multiple priorities, including “rehabilitation and restoration of road, railway and bridge connectivity and construction of houses fully destroyed and partially damaged.”
India had previously launched “Operation Sagar Bandhu” on Nov. 28, immediately after Cyclone Ditwah, to deliver urgent humanitarian assistance and disaster relief to Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile, the International Monetary Fund (IMF)’s Executive Board last week approved a disbursement of roughly $206 million to Sri Lanka to provide emergency support for payments and financial strain caused by the cyclone.
