Nigeria Confirms Liberation of Abducted Pupils
(MENAFN) The last 130 youngsters taken in one of the most significant mass abductions in Nigeria this year have now been released, officials of the West African country declared on Sunday.
Aide to Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, Bayo Onanuga, stated that the children, who were kidnapped on November 21 from St. Mary’s Catholic boarding institution in Papiri, Niger State, regained freedom after a military intelligence mission.
“They are expected to arrive in Minna on Monday and rejoin their parents for the Christmas celebration,” Onanuga posted on X.
Armed assailants captured more than 300 pupils along with 12 staff members during the early-morning raid on the school in the north-central region. The incident was part of a rising wave of school abductions that has unsettled communities and provoked criticism of Nigeria’s security approach. While fifty students managed to flee shortly after the assault, authorities facilitated the release of another 100 on December 8.
No organization has openly accepted responsibility for the Papiri kidnapping, which stands as the largest school abduction since Boko Haram carried off 276 schoolgirls from Chibok in 2014.
