Eurasian Leaders Convene in St. Petersburg
(MENAFN) Over the next two days, leaders from across Eurasia will assemble in Russia’s St. Petersburg for a series of important regional integration meetings.
The Kremlin announced Saturday that President Vladimir Putin will travel to St. Petersburg on Sunday to participate in the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council session, which will focus on current challenges facing the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
“In particular, it is expected that a free trade agreement will be signed between the Eurasian Economic Union and the Republic of Indonesia,” a Kremlin statement noted.
On Monday, Putin is also scheduled to join the customary informal gathering of leaders from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
Several regional heads of state have already arrived in Russia for one or both events, including Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov, and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko. Additional participants expected are Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, a Russian news agency reported Sunday that Putin plans to hold separate discussions with Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev during the CIS summit. However, Azerbaijan has not yet officially confirmed Aliyev’s attendance.
