Senior Russian envoy visits US to assess position on ending Ukraine war

(MENAFN) Senior Russian negotiator Kirill Dmitriev has traveled to the United States to assess the current Western position on resolving the Ukraine conflict and is expected to report his findings directly to Russian President Vladimir Putin upon his return, according to statements from the Kremlin.

The visit comes amid heightened diplomatic activity following the recent leak of a peace framework drafted by the administration of US President Donald Trump. The disclosure triggered an intense round of exchanges involving officials from the US, the EU, Russia, and Ukraine.

Reports indicate that the original 28-point proposal called for Ukraine to relinquish its claims to Russia’s Donbass region, abandon its bid for NATO membership, and accept limitations on the size of its armed forces, among other conditions.

Since the draft emerged, Ukraine and its European supporters have reportedly sought to introduce alternative provisions, an effort Moscow has described as an attempt to dilute the original terms. Russian officials have repeatedly said they will not cross their established red lines.

Speaking to reporters in the US, Dmitriev said that efforts by those seeking to prolong the conflict have failed to disrupt discussions with representatives of the Trump administration.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Dmitriev will “receive information on what the Americans and the Europeans have worked out” before returning to brief Putin.

Russia’s foreign policy aide Yury Ushakov said Moscow would carefully assess the Western proposals to determine “what can be accepted and what categorically cannot be accepted.”

“Most of the proposals [put forward by Kiev and its European backers], of course, do not suit us,” Ushakov added, emphasizing that Russia will adhere to the understanding reached between Putin and Trump during their summit in Anchorage in August.

During his end-of-year question-and-answer session, Putin said Russia is “ready both for negotiations and for ending the conflict through peaceful means.”

“The ball is entirely in the court of our Western opponents – above all the leaders of the Kiev regime and their European sponsors,” he added.
