China Condemns US Vessel Seizures in Caribbean
(MENAFN) On Monday, China strongly criticized the United States for “arbitrarily seizing” ships belonging to other nations, as tensions in the Caribbean continue to rise.
“The US practice of arbitrarily seizing other countries’ vessels grossly violates international law,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian told journalists in Beijing.
“China opposes unilateral, illicit sanctions that have no basis in international law or have no authorization of the United Nations Security Council,” Lin added.
Beijing’s remarks came as American forces pursued another Venezuelan oil tanker in the Caribbean. If captured, it would mark the third vessel intercepted since December 10.
The US Coast Guard "operation" is targeting the Bella 1 tanker, a Panamanian-flagged ship sanctioned by Washington, which is heading to Venezuela to load crude oil, according to a media outlet.
This latest move follows the boarding of the Centuries supertanker on Saturday and the Skipper earlier in December.
The situation underscores mounting friction between Washington and Caracas. US President Donald Trump has declared a "total and complete blockade" of sanctioned oil tankers attempting to enter or leave Venezuela.
