Spanish Premier’s Party Suffers Loss in Regional Elections
(MENAFN) Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s party endured a major setback on Sunday in regional elections in Extremadura, a west-central autonomous community, as the far-right Vox party achieved notable gains.
The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) managed to secure only 18 of the 65 seats in the regional legislature, a sharp decline from the 28 seats won in the 2023 election — marking their weakest performance ever in Extremadura, according to reports.
The conservative Popular Party (PP) had previously assumed control of Extremadura in July 2023 by forming a coalition government with Vox. Maria Guardiola of the PP was sworn in as president, ending decades of Socialist dominance in the region.
In the latest vote, the PP sought an outright majority but fell short, winning 29 seats.
Consequently, the PP will once again depend on Vox, which expanded its representation from five to 11 seats, to advance legislation.
Regional administrations in Spain hold authority over critical policy areas such as culture, healthcare, education, and infrastructure.
The Extremadura election was widely seen as a measure of the PSOE’s broader political standing as it continues to lead the minority national coalition.
