Spanish Socialists lose ground as Vox gains in Extremadura elections
(MENAFN) Spain’s ruling Socialists faced a significant defeat on Sunday in the regional elections of Extremadura, a community in the country’s west-central area, as the far-right Vox party achieved notable advances.
The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) captured only 18 of the 65 seats in the regional assembly, a drop from the 28 seats they held after the previous 2023 election, marking their weakest performance ever in Extremadura, according to reports.
The conservative Popular Party (PP) assumed control in Extremadura in July 2023 by forming a coalition government backed by Vox. Maria Guardiola of the PP was sworn in as regional president, ending decades of Socialist dominance.
Seeking an outright majority, the PP called the recent election, but although it emerged as the largest party with 29 seats, it still fell short of a majority. Consequently, the PP will once again need Vox’s support, which grew from five to 11 seats, to advance legislation.
Regional governments in Spain hold significant authority over sectors such as health care, education, culture, and infrastructure. The Extremadura vote was seen as an indicator of the PSOE’s national standing, as it heads a minority coalition government.
