U.S. Louisiana Governor Named as Greenland Special Envoy

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump announced Sunday the appointment of Jeff Landry, Louisiana's governor, to serve as United States special envoy to Greenland.

Landry understands "how essential Greenland is" for US national security and will "strongly" advance the country's interests to ensure the safety and security of its allies and the wider world, Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

"Congratulations Jeff," he added.

The Arctic territory, operating under Danish sovereignty since 1953, has captured Trump's attention owing to its geostrategic position and extensive mineral deposits.

Trump previously described owning Greenland as an "absolute necessity" for US economic security, comparing the acquisition to a "large real estate deal."

Both Denmark and Greenland have dismissed any overtures to transfer ownership of the territory, with Danish authorities reaffirming their ongoing sovereignty over the island.
