Malaysian PM Presses for Dialogue as Thailand-Cambodia Tensions Rise

(MENAFN) Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim conducted telephone diplomacy with his Thai and Cambodian counterparts, pressing for diplomatic engagement to defuse escalating border hostilities between the two Southeast Asian nations.

The consultations preceded Monday's Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) foreign ministers' gathering.

Anwar stated on US social media platform X that throughout the discussions, "I emphasized the importance for Cambodia and Thailand to adhere to the spirit of dialogue, wisdom, and mutual respect in order to end the tensions and maintain the peace and stability in the region."

Thailand and Cambodia finalized a peace accord in October within Kuala Lumpur with Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim present, though implementation stalled after Thai military personnel sustained severe injuries from a landmine detonation in a frontier province.

The neighboring nations share a protracted territorial disagreement that has repeatedly triggered armed confrontations.
