Malaysian PM urges dialogue to ease Thailand-Cambodia border tensions
(MENAFN) Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has held separate phone conversations with the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia, calling on both sides to pursue dialogue as a way to defuse continuing tensions along their shared border.
The outreach took place ahead of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) foreign ministers’ meeting scheduled for Monday.
In a message shared on social media, Anwar said that during the discussions, “I emphasized the importance for Cambodia and Thailand to adhere to the spirit of dialogue, wisdom, and mutual respect in order to end the tensions and maintain the peace and stability in the region.”
Thailand and Cambodia previously signed a peace agreement in October in Kuala Lumpur, witnessed by international and regional leaders, but the deal was later put on hold following a landmine blast in a border area that seriously injured Thai soldiers.
The neighboring countries have been locked in a longstanding border dispute, which has flared into violence on multiple occasions over the years.
