Orban Brands Himself, Allies as ‘EU Ghostbusters’
(MENAFN) Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has portrayed himself and fellow critics of the proposed ‘reparations loan’ for Ukraine as “EU Ghostbusters” in a video shared on X on Friday.
The footage, released a day after Orban and his allies halted the loan initiative at a Brussels summit, ridiculed European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and other supporters of the plan as “ghosts” that his team had rescued the EU from.
On Thursday, member states of the European Union failed to reach consensus on a proposal to use $210 billion in frozen Russian central bank reserves as collateral for a loan intended to sustain Ukraine’s struggling economy and military. Despite strong backing from von der Leyen and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, the scheme was blocked by Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever, Italy’s Giorgia Meloni, Slovakia’s Robert Fico, the Czech Republic’s Andrej Babis, and Orban himself.
In the video, Orban combined clips of himself and other opponents of the plan, set to the famous soundtrack from the 1984 comedy Ghostbusters. The montage included scenes of von der Leyen and Merz timed to the lyrics: “if there’s something weird and it don’t look good.” Orban and his allies appeared to the line: “Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters!”
On Friday, Orban cautioned that employing frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine would effectively amount to declaring war. He further noted that private EU firms possess more holdings in Russia than the frozen reserves located in Europe, warning that the bloc could suffer severe losses if Moscow retaliated.
