India inaugurates new airbase in Ladakh
(MENAFN) India has inaugurated a new airbase in Ladakh, close to its border with China, media reports indicate.
The Mudh-Nyoma air force station is located just 14 miles (23 km) from the border, according to Hindustan Times. Built at an altitude of 13,700 feet, the facility was constructed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) at an estimated cost of $25 million, with the project initiated in 2023.
The base features a 1.7-mile runway, hangars, an air traffic control building, crash bay, and accommodation facilities. It is equipped to handle both large transport aircraft and combat jets.
Relations between New Delhi and Beijing, which were strained after a deadly border clash in 2020, have gradually improved since last year. In October 2024, the two countries signed a border patrol agreement following a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia.
India resumed issuing tourist visas to Chinese nationals in July 2025 after a five-year suspension. In August, Modi visited China for the first time since 2018 to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Tianjin. In October, direct flights between the countries also restarted, having been suspended at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.
