Sudan Leads Global Humanitarian Crisis Watchlist for Third Year

(MENAFN) Sudan has been named at the top of the International Rescue Committee’s (IRC) Emergency Watchlist for worldwide humanitarian crises for the third consecutive year, the aid organization announced on Tuesday.

The 2026 watchlist identifies 20 countries most vulnerable to worsening humanitarian conditions in the upcoming year. Sudan holds the first position, followed by the Palestinian territories and South Sudan. Other African nations appearing on the list include Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mali, and Burkina Faso.

According to the report, 33.7 million people in Sudan, including 15 million children, are currently in need of humanitarian support, accounting for approximately 67% of the nation’s population.

The country is enduring critical food shortages, with 19.2 million individuals facing severe food insecurity and 207,000 experiencing catastrophic hunger. Since December 2024, Sudan has reported over 100,000 suspected cholera cases, marking the largest outbreak in the country’s history, the data reveals.

Sudan has been trapped in a violent conflict for more than two years. The report notes that “Sudan is now the third most dangerous country for aid workers, accounting for 12% of attacks against aid workers globally in 2025.”
