Malaysia Escalates Evacuations Amid Floods


(MENAFN) Severe flooding in Malaysia has compelled the relocation of thousands more residents on Thursday, according to reports from local media.

In Pahang state, 8,226 individuals were moved to temporary evacuation shelters, a significant increase from 3,796 just one day prior, a media outlet reported.

Johor recorded 347 flood-affected residents, while Terengganu saw the number rise to 913. Meanwhile, in Kelantan, 16 people were evacuated due to rising waters.

The recent spate of floods, landslides, storms, and cyclones has inflicted extensive damage across South Asia and Southeast Asia.

In neighboring countries, the impact has been severe. Indonesia has reported at least 1,059 deaths and 192 missing persons, while Sri Lanka confirmed 640 fatalities with 211 people still unaccounted for. In Malaysia, authorities have confirmed three deaths so far.
