Ex-German leader tours historic locations in Turkey

(MENAFN) Former German President Christian Wulff recently visited several historic locations in Iznik, a district in Türkiye’s northwestern Bursa province. He was accompanied by his daughter, Annelena, and close friends during the tour.

Wulff explored sites ranging from the Istanbul Gate of the ancient city walls to the Afyon Sultan Mosaic Excavation Area. Speaking at the Ancient Theater, the final stop of his visit, he expressed being deeply impressed by the city’s heritage.

Highlighting Türkiye’s rich historical and cultural legacy, Wulff noted recent significant archaeological discoveries in Iznik. He described the unearthing of a basilica as particularly remarkable and suggested that Christians worldwide would likely visit these sites in the coming years.

He also emphasized the significance of finding what is believed to be the world’s earliest depiction of Jesus, dating back to approximately 380 AD. “As a Christian, learning about the beginnings of Christianity in the region just a few centuries after the birth of Christ was deeply emotional for me,” Wulff said, adding that Iznik holds tremendous potential as an archaeological destination.
