Uganda Overtakes Ethiopia as Africa's Top Coffee Exporter
(MENAFN) Uganda has surpassed Ethiopia to claim the position of Africa's premier coffee exporter, national media outlets have disclosed, referencing data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries.
Based on the ministry's October 2025 assessment, quoted by the Kampala Post, the nation shipped 8.4 million 60-kg bags of coffee during the year ending October, yielding $2.4 billion in proceeds—the most substantial earnings ever achieved by Uganda's coffee industry. These numbers mark a 46.96% jump in export quantities and 77.33% surge in worth versus the 5.8 million bags valued at $1.3 billion dispatched twelve months prior.
The shipment figures eclipse Ethiopia's 7.82 million bags documented in 2024/25, establishing Uganda as the continent's foremost coffee exporter.
The expansion was predominantly driven by arabica coffee export acceleration, which skyrocketed 116.95% year over year, while export revenues soared 182.3%. Robusta deliveries likewise climbed sharply, with export quantities advancing 31% and values rising 19%, the ministry reported.
"Coffee export volume was higher than the previous year on account of increased coffee production as harvest in Central and Eastern regions is already underway. Coffee prices at the global scene improved on weather related concerns Central America and Brazil and Vietnam," the report stated.
Europe persisted as Uganda's primary export market, representing 63% of aggregate shipments. Italy emerged as the dominant purchaser, consuming 26.22% of exports, trailed by Germany at 10.67%. Additional principal markets encompassed India, Switzerland, and the U.S.
Throughout Africa, Uganda dispatched 108,540 bags, constituting 16% of regional exports. Principal purchasers featured Algeria, Sudan, Morocco, Tunisia, South Africa, Kenya, and Egypt.
