Honduran leader says coup attempt to overthrow her is underway
(MENAFN) Honduran President Xiomara Castro has claimed that efforts are underway to remove her government through unconstitutional means, calling on citizens to rally in defense of democratic rule as uncertainty continues over the outcome of the country’s recent elections, which remain unresolved two weeks after voting.
In a series of public statements, Castro alleged that former president Juan Orlando Hernández—who was convicted on drug trafficking charges in the United States last year and later pardoned by President Donald Trump—is preparing to return to Honduras. According to her claims, his objective would be to declare his political party’s candidate the victor of the 2025 general election despite the lack of finalized results.
Detailing her accusations online, Castro wrote: “I report with historical responsibility that, based on verified intelligence information, Juan Orlando Hernández, pardoned in the United States, is planning his entry into the country to proclaim the winner of the elections, at a time when an aggression is underway aimed at breaking the constitutional and democratic order through a coup against my government.”
Hernández, who governed the country from 2018 until 2022, is affiliated with the Honduran National Party. That same party backs Nasry Asfura, who is currently described in preliminary tallies as the leading contender in the 2025 race.
According to provisional figures released as of Tuesday, Asfura holds approximately 1.3 million votes, giving him a margin of 43,185 votes over Liberal Party candidate Salvador Nasralla, who has received 1,261,849 votes.
Castro’s warnings come amid ongoing claims of electoral manipulation. The ruling LIBRE party has repeatedly rejected the reported results, alleging that the National Electoral Council is attempting to influence the count in favor of Asfura and the National Party.
Urging public action, Castro appealed for mass mobilization in the capital, stating: “I call on the people, social movements, collectives, grassroots organizations, party militants, and citizens to urgently and peacefully gather in Tegucigalpa to defend the popular mandate, reject any coup attempt, and make visible to the world that a new coup is being forged here.”
