Thailand-Cambodia Border Clashes Leave Dozens Dead
(MENAFN) Renewed hostilities between Thailand and Cambodia have reached their 11th consecutive day as of Wednesday, with at least 52 fatalities reported on both sides since the conflict flared up on Dec. 7.
Cambodia’s Defense Ministry stated on Wednesday that the Thai military had conducted artillery bombardments and drone attacks in the border region, according to a media outlet.
The ministry also noted that Cambodian forces retaliated by launching BM-21 rockets at Thai positions.
These developments occurred after Thai troops seized control of the Chong Anh Ma area following intense combat, as reported by a public broadcaster.
Thailand declared on Tuesday that Cambodia should be the first to announce a ceasefire to stop the deadly confrontations, which have forced over 700,000 people from their homes on both sides of the frontier.
Thai Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maratee Nalita Andamo emphasized that any ceasefire must adhere to specific conditions and be credible, urging Cambodia to “sincerely cooperate in demining efforts along the border” to bring an end to the conflict.
According to Thai authorities, 19 Thai soldiers and 16 Thai civilians have died so far. Cambodia’s Interior Ministry reported 17 civilian deaths and 77 injuries among its population.
The clashes have persisted despite US President Donald Trump announcing on Friday that the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia had agreed to cease the renewed fighting.
