Pro-Israel donor pushes Trump to run for another presidential term
(MENAFN) Pro-Israel donor Miriam Adelson publicly encouraged former US President Donald Trump on Tuesday to consider running for a third term, suggesting there may be legal mechanisms to make it possible.
“She said, ‘think about it, I’ll give you another $250 million’,” Trump said while speaking with Adelson at a Hanukkah event held at the White House.
Adelson, a major contributor to Trump’s campaigns—including in 2024—mentioned that she had consulted with pro-Israel attorney Alan Dershowitz regarding potential legal pathways for a third Trump presidency, an idea critics contend is prohibited by the 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution.
"I met Alan Dershowitz," Adelson, 80, told attendees after Trump called her on stage. She explained that Dershowitz had reviewed the legal considerations for pursuing another term.
"I said, Alan, I agree with you. So we can do it. Think about it," she told Trump, prompting the audience to chant: “Four more years.”
Trump also noted that Adelson had contributed $250 million to his campaigns, “indirectly and directly.” According to data from non-partisan election watchdogs, the Las Vegas casino magnate funneled $106 million into Preserve America, an election-focused group that supported Trump’s 2024 campaign.
Trump additionally recalled the involvement of Adelson’s late husband, Sheldon, highlighting his advocacy for Israeli interests during frequent White House visits.
“He'd always say 10 minutes, it turned out to be about an hour and a half. And what he did is he fought for Israel,” Trump said.
Turning to the US political climate, Trump criticized growing opposition to Israel among lawmakers, accusing some members of Congress of antisemitism.
"Fifteen years ago, the strongest lobby in Washington was the Jewish lobby. It was Israel. That’s no longer true.
"You have a Congress, in particular, which is becoming antisemitic. You have AOC (Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez) plus three, you have those people, Ilhan Omar … you have to be very careful," he stated.
Critics targeted by these comments, such as Ocasio-Cortez and Omar, have dismissed allegations of antisemitism, clarifying that their critiques are directed at Israeli government policies rather than Jewish people.
