US Sends Cuban Migrants to Guantanamo
(MENAFN) The United States relocated 22 Cuban migrants to its naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, even after a federal judge determined that the administration had surpassed its legal authority by detaining migrants at the site, according to a report released on Tuesday.
The men, believed to be the first Cuban nationals sent to the base since January, arrived on Sunday aboard an ICE air charter from Louisiana, a media outlet reported, citing sources familiar with the situation.
ICE has previously detained roughly 730 men at Guantanamo, primarily from Latin American nations such as El Salvador, Guatemala, and Venezuela, according to the report.
Among the latest group, five individuals were labeled as “high-threat illegal aliens,” while the remaining migrants will reside in dormitory-style accommodations typically used for Caribbean asylum seekers, the daily noted, quoting an unnamed Department of Defense official.
Guantanamo is also known for its notorious military prison, where detainees have been held and frequently subjected to torture in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the US.
In January, President Trump announced his intention to utilize the detention center for the transfer of undocumented migrants.
Recently, a federal judge in Washington ruled that the Trump administration had overstepped its authority in keeping migrants at Guantanamo.
