Hungary signs deal to import LNG from US over next five years

(MENAFN) Hungary has signed an agreement to import 2 billion cubic meters of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States over the next five years, the country’s Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto announced Tuesday.

“Today we have reached an important milestone in American-Hungarian energy cooperation by signing a contract for 400 million cubic meters of LNG a year,” Szijjarto wrote on social media platform X.

Under the deal, Hungarian state-owned energy company MVM will receive LNG shipments from US energy firm Chevron, totaling 2 billion cubic meters over the five-year period.

Szijjarto emphasized Hungary’s strategy of diversifying energy sources and routes to ensure competitive prices, stating, “We are interested in purchasing energy from as many sources and via as many routes as possible, ensuring the lowest prices.”

The announcement comes as Hungary continues to prioritize its energy security, repeatedly opposing efforts to halt Russian oil imports.
