BBC to defend ten billion dollars case against Trump
(MENAFN) The British public broadcaster said on Tuesday that it intends to contest a $10 billion lawsuit filed by US President Donald Trump, stemming from the editing of his January 6, 2021, speech in a documentary aired under its current affairs programming.
According to court filings in Florida, the president submitted the complaint a day earlier, seeking $5 billion in damages on each of two separate claims. The lawsuit alleges defamation as well as violations of trade practices law, as outlined in the legal documents.
Responding to the case, a spokesperson for the broadcaster reaffirmed its position. “As we have made clear previously, we will be defending this case,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “We are not going to make further comment on ongoing legal proceedings.”
The dispute arose after reports emerged late last year citing a leaked internal memo that raised concerns about how the documentary was edited. The program, which aired roughly a week before the 2024 US presidential election, was accused of combining two different portions of Trump’s speech in a way that suggested he directly encouraged the January 2021 unrest at the US Capitol.
In the original address, Trump said, “We're going to walk down to the Capitol, and we're going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women.” However, in the edited version shown in the documentary, viewers heard him say: “We're going to walk down to the Capitol, and I'll be there with you. And we fight. We fight like hell.”
According to information cited in reports, the two excerpts used in the edit were delivered more than 50 minutes apart during the speech.
The broadcaster later issued an apology to the former president but declined to provide compensation and rejected the assertion that there was a “basis for a defamation claim.”
The controversy also led to leadership changes within the organization, with its director-general and head of news stepping down last month amid the fallout.
Separately, a White House spokesperson sharply criticized the broadcaster, describing it as a “leftist propaganda machine” and “100% fake news.”
