Two US lawmakers urge Congress to repeal Caesar sanctions on Syria
(MENAFN) Two senior US legislators have called on Congress to eliminate the Caesar sanctions on Syria as the Senate prepares to vote on the annual defense bill, according to reports.
Senator Jeanne Shaheen, ranking Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Representative Joe Wilson, a Republican, expressed their position in an op-ed published in Foreign Policy magazine. Their comments came ahead of the anticipated Senate consideration of the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which contains a provision to lift sanctions enacted under the Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act.
“These sanctions now punish a country made up of Assad’s former victims—who are all trying to recover. If we do not change course, Syria’s suffering and its people’s hard-won progress could be squandered,” they wrote.
The lawmakers argued that short-term waivers are insufficient to attract the investment necessary for Syria’s reconstruction. “Repealing debilitating sanctions will allow Syrians to meet the many demands we place on them by building the capacity to find and destroy chemical weapons, halt the illegal drug trade, destroy the Islamic State, and develop the means to protect all Syrian citizens equally,” they added.
The US House of Representatives last week approved the $901 billion NDAA, which includes the full repeal of Caesar sanctions, and forwarded it to the Senate. If the Senate passes the bill, it is expected to be signed into law by President Donald Trump.
