Romania’s Prime Minister Survives No-Confidence Vote

(MENAFN) Romania's legislative body turned down a no-confidence challenge targeting Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan's administration on Monday, as the motion failed to attract sufficient parliamentary backing during a combined legislative session.

Lawmakers cast 141 ballots on the proposal labeled "Romania is not for sale - without progressives in government," with 139 supporting removal and two opposing. Despite 420 parliamentarians attending from the 463-member legislature, supporters came nowhere close to the 232-vote threshold required for passage.

Senator Ninel Peia spearheaded the challenge, drawing backing from representatives in the PACE-First Romania bloc, the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), along with several unaffiliated legislators.

Critics alleged Bolojan's administration had bungled oversight of critical areas spanning fiscal policy, medical services, schooling, welfare programs, legal affairs, and governmental operations.

Taking the floor during parliamentary proceedings, Bolojan mounted a vigorous defense, asserting the nation faced potential collapse of market credibility when his tenure began half a year earlier.

"We avoided that scenario through measures that have begun to rebalance the economy and curb the deficit," Bolojan said, citing improved budget revenues, a reduced deficit compared with last year, and renewed investor confidence reflected in lower borrowing costs.

Bolojan pledged his administration would reject implementing fresh taxation hikes in the coming year, stating priorities would center on strengthening revenue collection mechanisms, fighting tax dodging, and securing European funding streams.

The prime minister lambasted those behind the removal effort, claiming they championed "chaos and scandal" rather than offering viable solutions.
