Turkey denounces drone attack on UN base in Sudan
(MENAFN) Türkiye strongly condemned a drone attack on a United Nations base in Sudan on Monday that claimed the lives of six Bangladeshi peacekeepers and left eight others injured.
In a statement, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said, “We wish Allah’s mercy upon the Bangladeshi peacekeepers who lost their lives in this heinous attack, and a speedy recovery to the wounded.” The ministry also highlighted the need to maintain Sudan’s unity and territorial integrity and reaffirmed “strong support for the efforts aimed at finding a peaceful solution to the ongoing conflicts in the country.”
The assault occurred amid ongoing clashes between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a conflict that has raged since April 2023, resulting in thousands of deaths, millions of displaced people, and one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises. The Sudanese military attributed the attack to the RSF, though the rebel group had not issued a response at the time.
The peacekeepers were serving with the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), deployed in a contested oil-rich border region managed by Sudan and South Sudan—the latter having gained independence in 2011. Both countries have long-standing territorial disputes over the area, fueling recurring conflicts. The UNISFA mandate was renewed just last month to continue its mission in the volatile region.
