Commercial Airliner, US Military Jet Almost Collide Near Venezuela
(MENAFN) A passenger plane narrowly avoided a mid-air collision with a United States military aircraft near Venezuela’s coastline on Friday, according to reports from media outlets, which cited radio transmissions and flight monitoring information.
The episode unfolded during a period of increased US naval presence in the Caribbean, alongside President Donald Trump’s warnings to target “narcoterrorists” operating on Venezuelan territory.
JetBlue Flight 1112, flying from Curaçao—a small island near Venezuela—to New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, reportedly came dangerously close to a US Air Force refueling tanker.
Approximately twenty minutes after takeoff, the plane unexpectedly lost altitude during its ascent. “We almost had a midair collision up here,” the JetBlue pilot reportedly said. “They passed directly in our flight path ... They don’t have their transponder turned on; it’s outrageous.”
JetBlue spokesperson Derek Dombrowski stated on Sunday that the airline had informed the authorities about the episode. “Our crew members are trained on proper procedures for various flight situations, and we appreciate our crew for promptly reporting this situation to our leadership team,” he said.
Colonel Manny Ortiz, a spokesperson for US Southern Command, confirmed they were “aware of the recent reporting regarding US military aircraft operations in the Caribbean and are currently reviewing the matter.” He emphasized that safety remained a primary concern and that the military was “working through the appropriate channels to assess the facts surrounding the situation.”
Since September, US forces have reportedly killed over 80 individuals in operations targeting suspected cartel vessels, which Trump claimed were being used by the Venezuelan government to “flood” America with narcotics.
