Bondi Beach attack’s hero has been identified
(MENAFN) Ahmed al Ahmed, 43, has been named as the bystander hailed a hero for tackling one of the shooters during the Bondi Beach attack in Sydney.
Footage verified by a news outlets Mr Ahmed running at one of the attackers, seizing his gun, and turning it on him, forcing the gunman to retreat. Mr Ahmed, a fruit shop owner and father of two, was hospitalized with gunshot wounds to his arm and hand and has undergone surgery, his family told 7News Australia.
The shooting on Sunday night killed 15 people and injured dozens more during a Hanukkah celebration attended by over 1,000 people. Police have classified the incident as a terrorist attack targeting the Jewish community. The two shooters were a father and son, aged 50 and 24. The father died at the scene, while the son remains in critical condition in hospital.
Mr Ahmed’s cousin, Mustafa, described him as “a hero, 100%,” noting he had been shot twice. Early Monday, Mustafa said he had seen Ahmed and hoped for his full recovery.
Video footage shows one gunman behind a palm tree firing at targets off-camera. Mr Ahmed, hiding behind a parked car, leaps at the attacker, wrestles the gun away, pushes him to the ground, and points the weapon at him. The gunman then retreats. Later, the attacker retrieves another gun and continues shooting from a nearby bridge, alongside a second gunman.
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns praised Mr Ahmed’s bravery at a news conference, saying his actions undoubtedly saved many lives. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese echoed the sentiment, calling him one of many Australians who ran toward danger to help others.
US President Donald Trump also commended Mr Ahmed at a White House Christmas reception, saying, “It’s been a very, very brave person… who went and attacked frontally one of the shooters, and saved a lot of lives.”
