Israel arrests two US activists in occupied West Bank
(MENAFN) Two US volunteers were arrested by Israeli forces on December 12 in the occupied West Bank while opposing the forced eviction of a Palestinian family, according to reports.
Irene Cho, from New York, and Trudi Frost, from Boston, were staying with the Abu Hamam family in the village of al-Mughayyer, northeast of Ramallah. The family, the reports state, has endured “ceaseless harassment and assault at the hands of Israeli settlers and armed forces for over a year.”
Israeli authorities reportedly revoked the activists’ permits through a summary procedure and transferred them to Givon prison near Ramla. The arrests followed claims by Israeli forces that a “month-long military order sealing the area” was in effect. However, maps included with the order did not cover the Abu Hamam home, which rights groups say makes the detentions unlawful.
The activists are refusing to comply with deportation while their lawyers challenge the orders’ legality. They are scheduled to appear before a custody review panel within 72 hours, according to reports.
