Authorities arrest suspect of shooting at Brown University

(MENAFN) US authorities have taken a person of interest into custody following a shooting at Brown University that left at least two people dead and nine others wounded, city officials said on Sunday.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley confirmed the detention while addressing reporters, stating: "We are able to report that we have detained a person of interest involved in yesterday's shooting."

Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez said the individual was taken into custody early Sunday but declined to disclose further details, citing the need to preserve the integrity of the ongoing investigation. He later clarified during a separate briefing that the suspect is in their 20s, correcting earlier reports that had placed the individual in their 30s.

Perez added that authorities are not searching for additional suspects at this time, though investigative work remains underway.

Mayor Smiley provided an update on the condition of those injured, saying seven people are in stable condition at Rhode Island Hospital, one remains in critical but stable condition, and another has already been released. He also noted: "We are not releasing any information about the victims at this time."

Smiley further announced that the shelter-in-place order affecting Brown University and nearby areas had been lifted.

In a separate statement, University Provost Francis J. Doyle III said that "all remaining undergraduate, graduate and medical classes, exams, and papers or projects for the Fall 2025 semester will not take place as scheduled."

The shooting took place shortly after 4 p.m. local time on Saturday, triggering a rapid response from campus police, followed by city law enforcement, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel.
