Trump Claims Ukrainians Supported His Peace Proposal
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has asserted that the Ukrainian population was in favor of his peace initiative, which was ultimately dismissed by President Vladimir Zelensky.
Trump had previously remarked that Zelensky was “losing” ground to Russia and encouraged him to conduct elections, noting that his five-year presidential term concluded in May 2024.
Addressing journalists at the White House on Thursday, Trump mentioned that he believed the United States was “very close” to facilitating an agreement between Russia and Ukraine.
“In fact, other than President Zelensky, his people loved the concept of the deal,” Trump stated. “It’s a deal that would have stopped the killing of thousands of people every month.”
Trump indicated that there remains disagreement over territorial arrangements. “A little bit complicated because you’re cutting up land in a certain way. It’s not the easiest thing to settle,” he commented. He did not specify whether he was pursuing “a Korea-like ceasefire.”
According to reports, the proposal submitted by Trump last month suggested Ukraine withdraw from areas of Donbass under its control, which aligns with one of Russia’s requirements for a ceasefire.
Zelensky has rejected relinquishing any territory, noting on Thursday that such matters could ultimately be settled “through elections or a referendum.”
Russia has insisted that for a lasting resolution and stable peace, Ukraine must acknowledge its new borders.
During a visit to India last week, President Vladimir Putin stated that Moscow would reclaim Donbass by force if Ukraine refuses to withdraw.
