Italian PM reaffirms Italy’s role in Gaza stabilization, reconstruction
(MENAFN) Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to a “leading role” in stabilizing and rebuilding the Gaza Strip during a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Rome on Friday.
According to the Italian government, Meloni emphasized Italy’s determination to support Gaza’s reconstruction, receiving full backing from President Abbas. The two leaders discussed regional developments and the importance of consolidating the ceasefire through the full implementation of US President Donald Trump’s ceasefire plan.
Meloni also reiterated Italy’s support for the Palestinian Authority’s reform program, highlighting its significance in reviving a political process aimed at achieving a just and lasting peace based on the two-state solution.
Despite the ceasefire that came into effect on October 10, conditions in Gaza remain dire, with Israel continuing to restrict the entry of humanitarian aid trucks, violating the agreement’s protocol. Since October 2023, Israel has killed more than 70,000 people in Gaza—mostly women and children—and injured over 171,000, with attacks continuing despite the truce.
Italy’s stance signals a proactive role in Gaza’s recovery and emphasizes support for both humanitarian aid and long-term political solutions in the region.
