Nine Dead as Floods Batter Iraq

(MENAFN) Devastating flash floods and torrential rainfall have claimed nine lives and left multiple people injured across Iraq, local media outlets reported Friday.

"The number of deaths caused by floods and weather fluctuations between Dec. 9 and 11 reached six, while the number of injuries totaled two," a source at the Iraqi Health Ministry disclosed to Iraqi media.

The agency documented two fatalities and one injury in Kirkuk province, two deaths in Dhi Qar province, single fatalities in both Wasit and Diwaniyah provinces, and one injury in Najaf province.

In a separate report, Kurdish media network Rudaw confirmed that Iraq's Kurdistan Region suffered three deaths in Sulaimaniyah province.

The Iraqi Meteorological Organization and Seismology forecasts continued unstable and wet weather conditions in the coming period.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani issued directives Wednesday to deploy emergency funding and relief aid to Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region following the devastating wave of severe weather and catastrophic flooding that battered the region and surrounding provinces.
