Bulgaria PM Coalition Government Collapses
(MENAFN) Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov's coalition administration in Bulgaria collapsed Thursday, yielding to mounting pressure just one day after nationwide demonstrations drew thousands into the streets.
Zhelyazkov declared his government's withdrawal moments before parliament convened to deliberate a sixth no-confidence vote targeting his leadership. Opposition factions had initiated the measure, citing catastrophic economic management. The motion garnered merely 106 votes in the 240-member legislative body—falling far below the threshold required for approval.
"Our desire is to rise to the level of what society expects. At this moment, as the constitution dictates, power stems from the sovereign and the voice of the people. We hear the voice of the citizens protesting against the government," Zhelyazkov stated.
Wednesday witnessed tens of thousands of Bulgarians flooding streets nationwide in sustained demonstrations. Public fury centered on fiscal strategy failures, particularly the controversial 2026 budget proposal that authorities subsequently abandoned. These mass gatherings have persisted for multiple weeks.
Zhelyazkov has yet to officially file resignation documents. His administration assumed office January 16 following October 2024's snap elections—Bulgaria's seventh parliamentary contest within a tumultuous three-and-a-half-year span.
