Croatia Secures Deal with Germany for Leopard Tanks

(MENAFN) Croatia formalized an agreement with Germany on Wednesday to acquire 44 Leopard 2A8 tanks, coinciding with Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic's official visit to Berlin.

Following the signing ceremony, Chancellor Merz expressed his appreciation for Croatia’s commitment. "I sincerely thank you for this trust," Merz stated.

"This strengthens our armed forces as NATO allies and integrates them seamlessly and efficiently through our systems. This has never been more important than today."

Merz also highlighted the broader significance of the partnership, saying, "It shows we stand together in the EU and in NATO. But it also shows we have the means to respond to current threats from Russia and others to our security and our integrity."

Prime Minister Plenkovic underscored the strategic value of acquiring the modern Leopard tanks for Croatia, emphasizing that the country will continue to modernize its military while taking advantage of new EU defense initiatives and contributing to collective security efforts.

"This is an important step when it comes to technology transfer in Croatia, to the transition to Western technology, where we can continue to strengthen cooperation in the area of defense and security — for example with DOK-ING company and others," Plenkovic added, pointing to opportunities for domestic industry collaboration.
