Andrej Babis gets sworn in as Czech Republic’s new PM
(MENAFN) Right-wing Euroskeptic Andrej Babis has officially assumed office as the Czech Republic’s prime minister, promising to prioritize domestic issues and scale back military support to Ukraine.
Babis’ ANO party won October’s parliamentary election but lacked a majority, leading it to form a coalition with the SPD and AUTO parties. The 71-year-old veteran politician previously served as prime minister from 2017 to 2021 and held roles as finance minister and deputy prime minister.
In a brief message on X, Babis thanked voters for their trust and pledged to defend the interests of all citizens while making the Czech Republic “the best place to live on the entire planet.” During a speech at Prague Castle, he said his government would challenge Brussels on Ukraine aid, energy policies, VAT, and tariffs. He also vowed to oppose EU migration rules and carbon-emission reduction targets.
Babis has consistently promised to redirect the government’s focus to domestic priorities, sharply criticizing state support for Ukraine’s military under his predecessor, Petr Fiala. He stated, “We will not give Ukraine a single crown from our budget for weapons,” though he indicated that Czech arms firms could continue exporting to Ukraine.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, another critic of sending military aid to Ukraine, congratulated Babis on X, calling him “a committed Czech patriot back at the helm.”
