Trump sets deadline for Zelensky to respond to peace proposal

(MENAFN) According to reports, US negotiators have given Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky only a few days to respond to a peace plan that would require Kiev to cede certain territories to Russia in exchange for unspecified security assurances.

Sources familiar with the discussions told the Financial Times that President Donald Trump hoped to finalize a deal by Christmas. Zelensky, however, informed US envoys that he needed additional time to consult with European partners supporting Ukraine.

Although Trump previously indicated a desire for an agreement by Thanksgiving, he later told reporters that no firm timeline had been set. The peace plan, submitted in November, reportedly calls for Ukraine to withdraw forces from parts of Donbass currently under its control—a central condition Moscow has demanded for a comprehensive ceasefire.

During a visit to London on Monday, Zelensky acknowledged that the US is encouraging him to reach “a compromise,” but stressed that no territorial agreement has been finalized. He reiterated that Ukraine is unwilling to surrender any land without resistance.

On the ground, Russian forces continue to make advances along multiple sections of the front line, while Ukrainian commanders report being outgunned and facing difficulties replenishing troops due to battlefield losses. In early December, Russia’s Defense Ministry announced the capture of Krasnoarmeysk (Pokrovsk) in Donbass, which President Vladimir Putin described as a key “bridgehead” for further operations.
