German FM expresses skepticism about ongoing Ukraine peace talks
(MENAFN) German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul on Tuesday expressed doubts over the prospects of a successful peace agreement for Ukraine, highlighting the challenges posed by Russia’s territorial demands.
Speaking from Guangzhou, China, Wadephul noted that territorial issues have been among the most difficult aspects of negotiations from the outset. “I am not yet certain that a compromise document will be on the table at the end of the day,” he said, adding that only Ukraine can make these decisions, which he acknowledged will be far from easy.
His comments follow Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s recent statements rejecting any territorial concessions in a scaled-down US-backed 20-point peace plan. Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine “has no right to give up its territories” and rejected suggestions to trade land for security guarantees.
He explained that the original 28-point plan was reduced to 20 points, with non-Ukrainian priorities removed, but underlined that no compromise has been reached regarding territorial issues. Zelenskyy stressed that considerations of exchanging land for security guarantees are off the table, citing Ukraine’s Constitution, international law, and the country’s moral duty to defend its land.
