Messi Becomes First Player to Win Back-to-Back MLS MVP Awards
(MENAFN) Lionel Messi secured his second straight MLS Most Valuable Player honor Tuesday, crowning a landmark season that delivered Inter Miami's maiden MLS Cup championship.
The Argentine superstar dominated the voting with 70.43 percent support from media members, players, and club technical personnel, decisively outpacing finalists Anders Dreyer, Denis Bouanga, Evander, and Sam Surridge.
"It was a long year, with many matches and a lot of travel, but also a historic year for the club, as it was the first time we won the MLS Cup," the Argentine said upon receiving the award.
"It's a great club, still quite young, and being able to achieve what we did was wonderful, very special."
The 38-year-old attacker delivered 29 goals and 19 assists across 28 regular-season appearances. He contributed an additional six goals and nine assists through six playoff fixtures.
His dual assists in Saturday's championship clash proved decisive as Inter Miami captured the trophy with a 3-1 triumph over the Vancouver Whitecaps.
The eight-time Ballon d'Or recipient and 2022 World Cup champion becomes the first player to win back-to-back MLS MVP awards.
He joins former United States international midfielder Predrag Radosavljevic as only the second two-time recipient, who earned the distinction in 1997 and 2003.
